Wednesday Wisdom: Tea tree Essential Oil
Tea tree essential oil is native to Australia in particular New South Wales on the east coast.
The tree was ‘discovered’ in 1770 when Captain James Cook sailed northward from Botany Bay and found a grove of trees which produced a spicy tea when drunk – hence the name Tea Tree.
However, the aborigines of the area have known about the healing properties of tea tree for centuries. Bathing in pools of water where leaves fell was known to help heal wounds.
Tea tree is fantastic for skin. It has antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal properties. It is fantastic for helping acne, cleaning wounds and is effective against cold sores.
Tea tree can also help with colds, flu, clearing catarrh and sinusitis. Research has also shown that Tea Tree has strong activity against MRSA amongst others (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tea_tree_oil).
Tea tree should be used diluted although can be applied neat (always test for sensitivity) and should never be taken internally as it is toxic.
